We are pleased to inform that the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO)’s concert themed Vivaldi’s Four Seasons scheduled on 8 March 2025 at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) was an instant sell-out. Due to this overwhelming response, the MPO has added another date, scheduled on Sunday, 9 March 2025 at 3.00 pm to be led by MPO Concertmaster and violinist Peter Daniš.
The Four Seasons or ‘La Quattro stagioni’, is a work that is so popular that it is probably the most recorded classical work ever (after Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony). Composed by Antonio Vivaldi in 1725, it is considered as one of the most graphically descriptive music ever written. It is a famous example of programme music (music specifically intended to depict events, characters, places and moods) and, in this case, it is four examples of ‘concerto grosso’ depicting spring, summer, autumn and winter.
This work lay in obscurity for more than two centuries. Then, in 1950, following a radio broadcast, it suddenly erupted into hit status, where it remains today. Listen for the many picturesque touches like simulations of bird calls, atmospheric conditions, animal cries, sounds of nature, peasant dances and even an attempt to describe a man walking on ice!
The concert will first open with Wolfgang Amadé Mozart’s Symphony No.25 written in 1773; pathos, passion and restless agitation pervade this music. This is Mozart’s most personal, intense and emotional-charged score. Next the MPO will present Fratres (translated as ‘brothers’), a music of oriental spirituality composed by Arvo Pärt in 1977.
