Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra Celebrates the Music of Chopin in a Two-Part Festival at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS

    July 18, 2025 by miekl

The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) presents a music celebration for renowned composer Frédéric Chopin in a two-part Chopin Festival at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), KLCC.

The first installment will be led by the MPO Music Director Junichi Hirokami and will kick-off on Saturday, 16 August 2025 at 8.00 pm presenting Chopin’s iconic Piano Concerto No.1 in E minor. This work received a highly successful premiere in Warsaw in 1830 with the then 21-year-old composer. The work is described as a romantic calm and rather melancholic character, with impression on a beloved landscape in one’s beautiful memories.

Collaborating with the MPO to present this work is pianist Melody Quah who will weave a range of emotions with lyrical melodies. Described as ‘a poet with titanium fingers who delivers with dazzling intensity’ by the Vancouver Sun, the Kuala Lumpur-born virtuoso has showcased her artistry in Hungary, Canada, England, Australia, Japan and the USA. She has appeared as soloist with the Richmond Philharmonic and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and collaborated with cellist Michael Kannen and trumpeter Joe Burgstaller. She has performed at the opening of Bukit Jalil Stadium and the Commonwealth Games in 1998, and the opening of Chopin Society Malaysia in 2002.

After the intermission, the MPO will present Shostakovich’s towering Symphony No.5 in D minor which received its first performance in Leningrad in 1937. It is a big, sturdy symphony cast in the traditional four-movement mold with a shattering climax. It has since become a foundation stone of the entire orchestral repertory.

The Chopin Festival continues with the MPO presenting Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.2 on Saturday, 11 October 2025 at 8.00 pm. This beloved work is renowned for its virtuosic demands to be delivered by pianist Martin Garcia Garcia. The masterpiece reimagined will be complemented with Sibelius’ Symphony No.2 to be performed by the MPO. Rune Bergmann will lead this concert.

Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS Presents A Special Showcase by the Temple of Fine Arts

    July 10, 2025 by miekl

Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) continues its initiative in providing a platform for the performances of Malaysian arts and culture. Fresh from its presentations of Mek Mulung Putera Cahaya Bulan, Randai Mudo Pak Belalang, Jit Sin High School’s Chinese Orchestra and Sanggar Seni last year, this time around, audience will be treated to a soul-stirring rhythm and colours of Indian performing arts by the Temple of Fine Arts (TFA) on Saturday, 6 September 2025 at 8.00 pm.

The highly anticipate showcase promises an immersive journey into the heart of Indian culture. Audience will be transported to a unique experience through the soulful melodies of Hindustani and Carnatic classical music. Adding a vibrant visual splendour to the evening, the DFP stage will come alive with exquisite presentations of four classical Indian dances; Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kathak and Kuchipudi.

The theme Ragas and Mudras is specially curated for this performance at DFP. Ragas is essentially a melodic framework or a ‘mode’ in Indian classical music, a combination of notes (called ‘swaras’) along with phrases and nuances (called ‘gamakas’) that define its unique character. Mudras is a symbolic ritual gesture, primarily performed with the hands, fingers, the entire body or even eye movements and breathing techniques. The word ‘mudra’ is a Sanskrit word which means ‘mark’ or ‘gesture’.

Founded in 1981, TFA is an organisation dedicated to the development and inculcating Indian arts and culture among the youth. It was set out to establish a dance institution and branched out to teach music and vocals in its curriculum. It has presented over 20 major productions and 300 short works including explorations of integrations of different cultural themes. TFA has staged its productions in tours around the world including Singapore, Sri Lanka, India, Australia, the UK and USA.

As the foremost cultural institutions of Malaysia, TFA has received recognition and support from the Ministry of Information, Communications And Culture and has performed at many major official events including the APEC Summit and the Commonwealth Cultural Festival, all in 1998. It has also won many accolades at the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards.

Witness the artistry and skills of the TFA artists in this special presentation themed Classical Traditions: Ragas and Mudras as they weave intricate cultural patterns that serves the soul, only at DFP! The TFA’s collaboration with DFP is a testament to both organisations’ enduring commitment towards nurturing the growth and sustainability of arts and culture.

Enjoy a 20% Family Package discount when you purchase 6 tickets for A Reserve and B Reserve categories.

The special performance by TFA is part of DFP Seni Festival extravaganza which include Mistik Pura Masyrik (a performance of enticing East Coast legendary folktales on 9 August 2025) and Sanggar Seni (a collection of music, dance and songs at the DFP foyer presented FREE for the public on 5-7 September 2025).
